Why Elementary School Counselors?
"The elementary school years set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. Elementary school counselors have an impact on these years by implementing a school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents and the community to create a safe and respectful learning environment. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, elementary school counselors help their students achieve academic success, develop an understanding of career opportunities and develop social/ emotional skills in response to issues they face. What do school counselors teach?
One major responsibility of elementary school counselors is to give classroom guidance lessons to all students in the school. At EES, I have 30 minutes each week with every 1st-6th grade class and 20 minutes every other week with each kindergarten class. The following image shows the four "Utah College and Career Readiness Student Mindsets" that we focus on as school counselors in Utah. All of my lessons with fall into at least one of the four mindset categories. For more info on the specific lessons I am teaching, click here.
